Denmark is a kingdom born of the sea and encompasses a mainland
peninsula and hundreds of islands located at the top of Europe.
Copenhagen, the capital should be a part of any Scandinavian itinerary but
there is much more to see in Denmark. Here is a five day independent tour by
rental car providing an opportunity to visit some of the many Danish highlights.
Day
1 After completing your stay in Copenhagen a rental car will be
waiting. A short drive brings you to Roskilde where the Cathedral containing
entombed
Danish monarchs is located. Here also, the outstanding Viking Ship museum
and workshop located on the Roskilde Fjord. After your Roskilde
visit continue
to Odense the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. Time for a visit to
the H. C. Andersen museum as well as the house where the author
lived and worked
before check in to your hotel for overnight accommodation.
Day 2 Continue
your drive to Billund and a visit to the fascinating amusement
park Legoland. It’s a land of surprise around every corner with astonishingly
accurate LEGO brick models. The whole family’s imagination will be
captured with the incredibly detailed animated depictions of life in recognizable
cities
and regions. Overnight in Billund.
Day 3 Next a stop in Århus
home of Den Gamle By (The Old Town). This fascinating open air
museum features
75 restored buildings from all over Denmark
dating from the 17th and 18th century. In the Forhistorisk Museum Moesgard
view the 2000 year old Graubelle Man. For your evening’s entertainment
lose yourself in cafes and clubs tucked away in intimate side streets.
Overnight in Århus.
Day 4 Continue to Aalborg the
charming and lively city on the Lim Fjord and home of world famous
Aalborg Akvavit. Aalborg
Cathedral, the Town
Hall and
Aalborg Castle are of special interest. For those of Danish ancestry
the Danish Emigration Archives are located here. Databases including
Copenhagen
police
records and Parish censuses can provide valuable assistance in establishing
a genealogical trail. Overnight accommodation in Aalborg.
Day 5 Driving
north we continue to the northern most point of Jutland and the
town of Skagen. Characterized by unique architecture Skagen
is a charming
fisherman’s
town located at the meeting of two seas Kattegatt and Skagerack. After
your Skagen visit continue to either Hirtshalls or Fredrikshaven to
return your
rental car or continue your Scandinavian adventure by car then by ferry
to either Kristiansand or Oslo in Norway or Gothenburg in Sweden.
