For
most, the idea of a cruise conjures up a picture of
a luxurious floating hotel carrying thousands of passengers.
How
about a small
intimate vessel with up to 50 cabins that takes you
through a unique waterway with two seas, a river, three canals,
eight lakes and
65 locks. This is the Göta Kanal.
Three unique
boats specially built to fit the locks and dating
back as far as the 1800’s cruise the Kanal. Of course,
the boats have been carefully modernized over the
years for increased
safety
and comfort and steam power gave way to diesel engines
a long time ago. The charming character of each vessel
both inwardly and outwardly
has been carefully maintained.
The traditional cruises
4 and 6 days in length in either direction between Gothenburg
and Stockholm
have been on the schedule almost
every year since 1869. On the four day cruises
the boat usually travels during the night and only one
night is spent in harbor. The 6 day
cruises allow time for additional stops and shore
excursions along the way. The choice of stops is
determined by the direction the boat
is traveling.
For those with limited time a two
day cruise between Motala and Söderköping
is available. This cruise travels through aqueducts,
Lake Roxen and Lake Asplången and Berg with an impressive
flight of 11 locks. Contact us for departure dates
